When two of their number start receiving a psychic distress call from beneath the ocean, the Animorphs must embrace multiple new animal forms in order to search the deeps. If they succeed, they may win a new ally in the struggle against the malevolent Yeerk. If they fail, they may lose their lives, and doom our planet to devastation. Thankfully these kids are good under pressure!
This remains a fun YA SF series, though I can definitely see some sombre notes peeking through. There's a reasonably convincing sense of danger, too, which I appreciate: the Yeerks and their minions may be thwarted for now, but they don't come across as hopelessly inept by any means.
