The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

4.0

The book was nice and enjoyable. My rating is 4/5 stars.

The writing style is very simple but beautiful, which makes reading this book really easy, especially for the younger audience. You can tell from the story and the writing style that it targets younger audience (it is a young adult book after all), but it was still enjoyable for me as an adult.

I have the illustrated version and, despite there being very few illustrations (only one illustration before each chapter, and there are eight chapters if I recall correctly), I liked the illustrations. It made me feel a bit more immersed in the world.

The book can be thought of as a collection of short stories as every chapter tells a different story that the protagonist (Bod) experiences at a different age. The stories are sometimes related and sometimes are not. The time jump between the stories (chapters) also differs.

The ending made me a bit emotional. For me, it was heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.

Spoiler
The only thing negative I can say about this book is that it did not mention enough details about why The Jacks of All Trades want to kill Bod so bad. It just tells this prophecy that was said a very long ago, and that was it. It just wasn't convincing enough for me. Maybe I missed something and if I re-read the book, I would form a different opinion, but this is just how I feel at the moment.
