People of the Book
by Geraldine Brooks
I heard so much about this book that I was reluctant to read it for fear I would be disappointed. I wasn't. It's fascinating. At the center of the book is the 14th century Sarajevo Haggadah--a priceless illuminated book used in the Jewish holiday of Passover. Hanna Heath, a rare book conserver from Australia, finds an insect wing, wine, stains, saltwater, and a white hair in the pages of the book and tries to unravel with the history and mystery of the book (Jews seldom used pictures (graven images) in their books). As the story of the book emerges, a history of religious intolerance and its affect on the people who lived through those periods--from the Spanish Inquisition, to the Nazis, to the Bosnian War--emerges. The story of the different individuals who made, used, and protected the Haggadah (Muslims, Jews, and Christians) renewed my faith in compassion, tolerance, and diversity.
