Betraying Big Brother: The Feminist Awakening in China by Leta Hong Fincher

5.0

The Chinese government, on the eve of International Women’s Day in 2015, arrested five feminist activists who were then jailed for 37 days termed "The Feminist Five". The detainment of the Feminist Five drew the attention of the entire world including Hillary Clinton as well as the inundating social media with #FreetheFive messages from other activists. These five women are part of a much larger feminist movement in China. Leta Hong Fincher explores this popular movement and its threat to the China's authoritarian Regime through the events in the lives of The Feminist Five as well as other Chinese activists. How could a feminist movement reconfigure China and the world?

I listened to this as an audiobook and thought it was incredible. I didn't know anything about feminism in China and wanted to expand my knowledge of Feminism in the countries other than the UK and the USA. Leta Hong Fincher is an incredible author and delves into women's rights democracy, politics and the global resurgence of women's activism and particularly its impact on an authoritarian government system and how an idea even if there is no formal organisation in the sense of a government organisation can have massive impact and move an entire demographic to action. I can't wait to read her other book Leftover Women!
