Pushing the Limits
by Katie McGarry
I wasn't expecting a lot out of this, I picked it up because it was realistic fiction which is hard to come by in Young Adult these days. While I did like the story, I didn't find it extraordinary. I've read a lot of really great fantasy in YA lately, and I don't think this style of writing really brings it to the table. It might be because of the frequently alternating viewpoints.
I do think it was a good idea for a book, it's deep and emotional, but besides style I had a problem with the characters. I just didn't find them deep enough for my tastes, especially Noah. I get that he's supposed to be "bad boy" but I don't really feel the mix of both that and his true self. It's kind of like one or the other, and I thought his language was really tacky. I don't have any problems with swearing, but it seemed forced like his leather jacket and him saying the F bomb a lot were the reasons he was so bad. It just didn't flow right for me.
I think it was okay for realistic fiction, but in no ways does it compare to Sarah Dessen or the debut novelist Huntley Fitzpatrick. Honestly, I feel that fantasy writers do a better job of delving into human emotions and building relationships than this did.
