Historical fiction is not usually something I enjoy, but overall this book was fun to read. Maybe because I only hear about old west, world war, or other wars and none of them interest me and are over done. The settings chosen in this book are more unique to me.

Anthologies also aren’t typically what I go for as they tend to not develop the story and characters as much as I would like. That’s true for this book, but it has the benefit that if I’m tiring of the historical-ness the story is short and I can easily take a break.

Mother Carey’s table: 4/5 perhaps too short? Riddled with boat terminology that is hard to understand and not a lot of context is given for there to be enough emotional weight.

The journey: 3.5/5 the folklore is interesting, but other than that it’s super boring.

Madeleine’s Choice: 4.5/5 a setting I did not know anything about. The story is good, but might have been better if it had more time.

El Destinos: 4/5

High Stakes: 5/5 the first story in this book to have a point the author makes.

Red Raven Ball: 2/5. Deals with guardian/mother/family trauma and I hate that.

Pearls: 0/5 trigger warning, rape. So I mostly skipped it, only read until I realized that’s all it was about and then read the last little bit. It also kind of spoils the whole book because it is clearly ment for tweens and teenagers, but including rape means that I would not want that demographic to read it.

Gold in the Roots of the Grass: 5/5. Earnest, interesting, different from the others so far.

The Legendary Garret Girls: 5/5. A fun ending, unlike most of the others.

The color of the sky: 2.5/5. The MCs voice was honestly annoying and her thought process was Illogical and frustrating.

Bonnie and Clyde: 1/5. Story would have us believe a 13 yr old girl started robbing banks and that a 15 yr old boy was given a policeman job in the Great Depression. The story annoys me instead of being believable.
Then the story wants you to believe that the same girl who supposedly has determination and gumption, who’s been robbing banks for 3 years, who says she’s loving life, seriously considered giving up and drowning in a river with no prompting for it.

Hard times: 5/5

City of Angels: 4/5

Pulse of the Panthers: 4/5. Not much of an ending but still good.

The Whole World is Watching: 5/5
