Nghi Vo’s prose is so beautiful, I will read anything she writes and get something out of it.

In the Acknowledgements, she says Siren Queen was the first novel she ever wrote, even though it was published later. I do think her magic-infused Great Gatsby adaptation, The Chosen and the Beautiful, is a stronger novel. That’s the book that made me fall in love with her work.

Although there is no explicit sexual violence, the threat of it and atmosphere of oppression from the studio leaders became hard for me to stomach after a while, and I took a long break from this book before finishing it.

PS This is the first book I’ve read that has a list of publisher credits at the end, which is awesome! I worked as a copy editor at a company for 6 years and never got my name in anything I worked on. I hope more publishers follow Tor.com’s lead in giving credit.
