The High Mountain Court
by A. K. Mulford
I really wanted to like this book more and it would’ve been a 2 star read for me if the ending didn’t have a couple of quick twists that I didn’t see coming. Spoilers below:
This book reads like a Sarah J Maas fic. The main character is hidden royalty after her entire court was slaughtered, there’s a magic life saving ring, a scene during a poker game that is very ACOMAF court of nightmares, fated mates where one knows and one doesn’t. The writing is juvenile and the other characters are not well thought out. They are just there as space filler with no backgrounds or interesting features. At one point the author writes out the main characters’ closest friends because I feel like they didn’t know what to do with them.
Remy is also such a perfect character that she immediately picks up and knows how to fight, how to perfectly swing off a horse after riding one twice, she remembers every single detail of her fallen court after not having seen it since she was 6. She and Hale are instantly in love because they are fated mates.
I feel like if the author would’ve taken more time to flesh out the characters this would’ve been way better. It is the lowest rated book in the series so maybe the next ones are a lot better. This just didn’t do it for me expect for the ending which was pretty neat during the final battle, but again the characters are just not fleshed out. Her brother dies immediately and her sister is like talking to a wall. But I might read the second one lol.
