One word: Grotesque
One of the few books that had me reeling every few chapters. I went in blind, not realising that I was already fooled by the cute hedgehog on the cover.
A recurring theme that Murata often conveys in her works is her critique on society told through the lens of people who do not conform to its' mold. This book captures the theme of alienation quite well and the trauma responses of the characters felt realistic & well-written. It is a very good book for its message but it was quite difficult to go through.
If someone asked me to describe this book it I would say it's the dark counterpart to Convenience Store Woman.
