Life Ceremony by Sayaka Murata
2.0

Maybe short stories just aren't for me. I'm a fan of Sayaka Murata, but I feel like the themes dissected in this book are better explored in both Convenience Store Woman and Earthlings. While I did like some of the stories in Life Ceremony, many of them felt underdeveloped or like they were recycling Murata's old ideas. In fact, some of the stories even reused exact plot elements from her full-length novels, as though I was just reading some alternate drafts!

At the end of the day, this wasn't really what I was hoping for. Life Ceremony is worth reading if you're a big Murata fan who loves her other books and wants more of the same, but if you're looking to try her out for the first time, I'd definitely recommend her full-length novels over this book.
