The Sword of Summer
by Rick Riordan
There's a lot I love about a Rick Riordan series. I like that they're entertaining. I love the little references to internet culture that pop up in chapter titles. I think he does an excellent job of incorporating and retelling mythology.
If you, like me, have read the Percy Jackson series(es), you may find the plot a little formulaic. Boy discovers previously unknown connection to god. Boy goes on quest. Boy meets godly members of family. Boy finds out not all gods are good. Boy embraces destiny. It is, to be sure. I still enjoyed it, though. It is what it is.
I particularly like Magnus' supporting cast of characters (particularly Hearthstone, the deaf elf, and Samirah the Valkyrie), and I'm hoping that will continue to make the series really enjoyable as it continues. I'm also interested to see how Riordan explores Magnus' connection to Annabeth, because one can never have too much Annabeth.
