The Strike Out

Something happens when Meghan Quinn dives back into the Brentwood Baseball world. When I first read the synopsis my first thought was why is she going backward? I know how Knox, Carson, and Jason’s story’s unfold. But when I read that we were getting a story on Holt (I’ll admit, I had to wrack my brain for his character) and Harmony, I was super intrigued. But then I was wary because I didn’t know if I could handle a heartbreaking break-up scene like the other books in this series did.

Let’s start with Harmony. The heroine of this book. She’s made her way out of her small hometown and is working her way through college towards a degree in Journalism. She doesn’t want to be like her parents, more specifically her mom, doing the same routine daily. I saw other reviews of how they disliked Harmony’s character. And I’ll admit, some things rubbed me wrong. She judged Holt because he was an athlete. After an athlete wronged her. Her reticence to even get to know Holt and even give him the time of day frustrated me. A solid 7 out of 10.

Now Holt. His inner dialogue was hilarious. Although his first impression on me was that of a pompous athlete that thinks he’s better than everyone else. His attitude at the diner sure didn’t help his case. But I learned that he hid himself, his true self, behind his attitude. Holt is a family man through and through. He’s also an athlete that plays with a heart condition. When I read that he has Long QT Syndrome, I quickly asked my sister if it was real. It is for anyone that’s concerned. He doesn’t let his health stop him from playing the sport that he loves and the going after the girl that’s captured him from day one.

Harmony and Holt together was epic, spicy, honest, and real. They really were the epitome of opposites attract. What I loved about this specific book, SPOILER ALERT, was that Meghan Quinn didn’t have them break-up and reunite years later. I think she read some reviews and had Priya, Harmony’s best friend speak them (the reviews) to get through her head. LOL!!! Every intimate scene between these two was hot. From the first kiss, to the first touch, to the first time together. Everything about it just seemed so natural. I loved how they were finally able to get on the same page about their future. Yes, they had to grow up a little bit faster in a short amount of time, but it was worth it.

One thing I will say that needs to be corrected when authors have sports books, is getting the title correct when talking about the sports staff. Qualified professionals that assess an athlete’s injury is called an athletic trainer. Not a trainer, because that could be any type of trainer. In this specific instance, it is Athletic Trainer. My sister has corrected me many times. Not just because she was a collegiate athlete, but also because she got her Master’s Degree in Athletic Training. I’ve seen a few books label an athletic trainer as a trainer, and it kind of irks me. In no means am I taking a star off this read…but for future reference.
