This book has left me feeling really torn. On one hand the writing is beautiful, the story line fast paced and the personal growth undertaken by Violent is engrossing. On the other hand the treatment of Violet from almost everyone is awful. I didn’t find her new found sexual pleasures at all liberating and actually found most of her sexual experiences in this story confronting and unpleasant. I’m confused as to whether this was a reasonable discussion regarding female sexual liberation or if it was merely a story about a group of older individuals taking sexual advantage of a young vulnerable person. Some of the other characters reveal a more redeeming side towards the end but I’m not sure whether it’s enough to abstain them from their actions earlier in the book. Violet’s contentment at the end was comforting and the fact she was able to finally understand what is was she desired perhaps indicates that the suffering she had to endure was worth it. I think this is a book that will divide individuals and perhaps for some instigate conversations or thoughts about our own sexual identities.
