This book is a beautiful meditation on community.
Birch’s novel is written with a propulsive pace but maintains a reflective aspect that lends itself perfectly to the dark subject matter of forced removal. Previously I had not read any indigenous lit from the Australian continent, so this book was my first foray into the politics of race in such context. It’s strikingly similar how post-colonial indigenous experiences are across the globe.
This might be a good primer novel before tackling Praiseworthy?
Overall, a well-rounded story meets effortless prose for a reading experience that’s informative, touching, and memorable. Read it!
