With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo

4.0

It’s been a while since I picked up a young adult fiction. There are some books in the genre that are golden nuggets of joy that I will demolish in a few sittings. With The Fire On High is one of these.

Following seventeen year old Emoni who dreams of being a chef, has a two year old daughter and is still at school - she juggles her passion for food, her love for her family and grades while trying to figure out how she wants to achieve her dreams.

There’s some real moments in here with themes such as stereotyping young mothers, colourism where people in her town question whether she is “black enough” because of her family roots and Spanish speaking family and the fact that she names her daughter “Emma” so from the first impression on a CV, her daughter can be successful in a job.

This book was so heartwarming and was written in a way that Emoni and her passion for food was real. Her experience in this novel would be relatable to readers in the real world, and I highly recommend this!
