"Fable" follows the titular Fable, the daughter of the head of a trading empire and a gemsage, whose father has left her on an island after her mother's death. At 18, she is finally close to having made enough money to buy passage off the island to confront her father and reclaim what is her right: a place on one of his crews.
During the journey off the island to her father's, she learns more about the crew of the ship that is transporting her and about her father, gets embroiled in their conflicts, and falls in love.
I expected more Fantasy from this book, but Fable's abilities as a gemsage are only considered very little in this book, except as a secret she is meant to hide. This feels like a setup for it to become much more important in the sequel, which is what I hope for. Otherwise, this book sure plays in a world different from ours, but it's not so different that it feels like a Fantasy novel. It felt more like a seafaring adventure novel set in a nebulous past, with the intrigues amongst the traders even feeling a bit pirate-like.
I enjoyed this, but expected something slightly different.
