The Rose & the Dagger by Renée Ahdieh
3.0

I am so perplexed by this series... Often, there were important plot developments that felt skimmed over, almost brushed aside (Khalid finally breaking the curse that had threatened all of Khorasan? Not that big a deal, apparently.). And other, seemingly unimportant moments that were given a lot more time on the page.

I still have so many questions. What happened with the Rajput? And how about Musa? Why did he give Shazi the rug? Did they ever share the details of the curse with the people of Khorasan? Or was that entire plot point forgotten about? But at the same time... I don't really care all that much. I didn't feel any true emotional connection with the characters, and struggled to feel the intended emotion of key scenes. Too much telling and not enough showing!

I am glad that I finally finished this duology, but I can't say that I will be seeking out any more Renee Ahdieh books. Her writing just isn't for me.

3 stars as I feel too ambivalent about the series to give it 2...
