Race To Crashpoint Tower by Daniel José Older

adventurous hopeful medium-paced

3.0

Some enjoyable enough filler for the Star Wars High Republic storyline, and there were some characters who I genuinely enjoyed getting to know, but for the most part this book was not a great addition to the series.

It was too messy, too rambling, too unfocused. The author didn't do a great job of introducing some characters (turns out they had appeared in the comic book series, the author clearly had assumed you'd be reading that and thus wouldn't need more than a couple sentences to introduce whole characters and relationships). I also don't think this book can stand on its own or have a sensical plot if you hadn't already read the adult novel which is happening concurrently with this book's plot, in which case... why write the middle grade story at all?

I've read another middle grade novel from the High Republic series and it did a great job of standing on its own legs, so I know it's possible to do that. This book just didn't hit the mark on that front.
