Night of Cake & Puppets by Laini Taylor

5.0

There is a special place in my heart for illustrated books. They were the first ones I read as a child and I've only appreciated them more as I get older. I also have a fondness for novellas and short stories, because they are great insights into characters and a world created with the love of an author.

NIGHT OF CAKE AND PUPPETS is one of my favourites. It tells the story of how Mik and Zuzana met, and it is the most heart-warming, sweet little adventure I've ever read. There is no threat or danger or anything that pushes the boundaries of the larger story. It's just two young people finally working up the courage to go on their first date. I adored it.

The illustrations are gorgeous, and it's clear that Laini and Jim had a great time working on this story. It's whimsical, funny, and imaginative. It made me smile nearly the whole way through.

Definitely a recommendation for fans of the DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE trilogy, and anyone who likes meet-cutes, romance, and humour.
