The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas
3.0

I last read The Three Musketeers when I was in my teens, and I suspect that is the right time to read it. Despite the book's size, it rattles along at a great pace, as do the four protagonists. The characters are pretty two-dimensional, and the amazingly beautiful and amazingly evil Milady is a splendid cartoon villain. We can only wonder whether she was born bad, or mistreatment made her that way.

I did enjoy the way in which Dumas pegged the story onto real events - the siege of La Rochelle, the assassination of the Duke of Buckingham - but it does not do to take any of it very seriously. Otherwise, I would have serious concerns about the vigilante behaviour of our heroes, and their complete disregard for the lives and rights of others.
