those men were clearly in love. it went from "omg hey I'm also at this bookstore lol" to "PLEASE LIVE WITH ME. I THINK YOURE BRILLIANT AND YOUR COMPANY WOULD GIVE ME MUCH PLEASURE." So points for gay detective and his observant but more normal/lonely bf
