The Tea Rose by Jennifer Donnelly

5.0

Hopeful, heartbreaking, witty, and emotional, The Tea Rose is a rollercoaster of feelings. It has just the right dose of humor (mostly through Nicholas Soames who is probably my new favorite character) to help lighten up the room, but in the end the book is first and foremost a journey of human pains.

Joy, love, loss, grief and all those in between are what makes a life. How each person handles it is due to their personality - how much they can take before it all becomes too heavy. Joe and Fiona certainly have their own flaws but it's their refusal to bend, and ultimately their ability to pick up the pieces and plow ahead, that makes their story so engrossing.

A great novel that started and ended with tears: human endurance is surely a wondrous thing to behold. Kudos to Ms. Donnelly.
