Autodiebe by Heiner Rank

3.0

I decided to read the most disgusting, dustiest, stained book that I had on my shelf for years now. I don't remember when or why I originally got it, but I know that I often thought about just throwing it out over the years because of the bad condition it was in. My copy of this novel was printed in 1960 and it seemed like it must have spent most of its 61 years of existence in a dirty, moldy basement somewhere.
While googling around a bit, trying to figure out where this book might have come from, I learned that during the division in West Germany you could collect your lottery ticket receipts and exchange them for a handful of books. This being of one of them. And somehow, over 60 years, it made it from shelf to shelf until it finally ended up with me.

Anyway, Autodiebe (transl.: Car Thieves) by Heiner Rank is a rather short crime story about a cop investigating the murder of his partner which eventually leads him to a circle of car thieves, as the title suggests.
It's a pretty light read. It has a few neat characters and it was pretty fun. Nothing fancy, nothing special. Probably nothing I'd remember for long, but I'm glad I finally read this book after all and it didn't just rot away on my shelf for the past few years for nothing.

Nevertheless, this old copy is going into the recycling bin immediately because it's just too far gone to keep or give away. I don't think anyone wants to read a book that makes them want to wash their hands after reading in fear of getting pink eye.
