The Illiad Of Homer by Alexander Pope
5.0
"Wrath, Oh Goddess, sing me the anger, of Achilles, Peleus’ son, that fatal anger that brought countless sorrows on the Greeks, and sent many valiant souls of warriors down to Hades, leaving their bodies as spoil for dogs and carrion birds: for thus was the will of Zeus brought to fulfilment."
It is quite fitting, that the start of the Illiad is met with the word wrath. A story— an epic, is a literary work often written down after centuries of oral tradition. Epics, no matter their origin, are first and foremost cautionary tales. They speak of heroes that triumphed over villains that offended the heavens. They speak of heroes that succumbed to their own flaws and became a shell of their former glory. And the Illiad speaks of a hero who wishes for eternal glory— at the cost of his own life.
Of course, his death is not what Achilles sought when he joined the Achean forces, however as cautionary tales go, this one also warned him of sacrifices in the name of prestige. But wrath, is always stronger.
The Illiad is a fine literary work that transcends cultural barriers with its themes and characters that speak to even the modern day man.
