I used to adore this series... And after rereading this, I'm not really sure why. The characters are obviously made to be liked (which isn't really an issue), but the only one I actually like to follow and keep up with is Chaol. Dorian is a bit whiny and full of himself, and despite most of the book being told from her perspective, you know next to nothing about Celaena. The plot is good, but I'm not totally sold on some parts of it making sense - why is Chaol captain of the guard at 22 if he had never even killed anyone? Also, how is Celaena the toughest person in the whole kingdom? She spends a lot of time complaining, and otherwise getting up to a bunch of shenanigans that don't seem to contribute to her development. And one more thing - why on earth did we not get full chapters for all of the supposedly very important tests??? Some of them were even entirely skipped over, like the ones on stealth and tracking. Despite the issues, I did actually enjoy reading this, if not mostly for the nostalgia factor and Chaol. I will probably end up reading the rest of the series for old times sake (even though it might ruin it a bit for me), but I can't totally say I'm excited for it.
