The Girl She Was
by Alafair Burke
Who is Hope? Who was Hope? Who is dead? Who was involved? So many questions arising through this book. Fourteen years ago, Hope was thrown from a car, and can’t remember who she was. Hope moves from Hopedale to the Hamptons for a better life and job prospects, and is now missing. A weird bloodstain in the house Hope was staging is the only clue. Who does the blood belong to? The journey to reveal what happened to Hope unearths a lot of untold secrets. Lindsay, Hope’s best friend teams up with NYPD Ellie Hatcher who seems to have a family history connection with a few of the character that surface from a case her father worked on many years ago. And even though the NYPD are linked to this case, it is best friend Linsday who does a lot of the work with her attorney hat on. The local cop, Carter doesn’t even seem interested until the link to the older case and a potential murder seems possible. So many connections, so many loose ends. So many small morsels that you need to pay attention to that often lead to a major revelation.
And then there’s the discovery of a dead body and Hope’s potential involvement; is she responsible? There is a lot that happens in this book, and it isn’t a very long book. And as Hope’s history starts to come to the surface, what does she remember, and what does she want to leave behind? The detail is there: if you blink you might miss it. You have to have hope in putting the pieces together …
