“Stars flickered around us, sweet darkness sweeping in. As if we were the only souls in a galaxy.”
“To the blessed darkness from which we are born, and to which we return.”
“I think my heart knew you were mine long before I ever realized it.”
I loved how cozy this story felt. It was fun to see perspectives of characters we wouldn't get normally. It was also super cool to just get some insight into the inner circle at Velaris. They are such a sweet family that's been together forever. I enjoyed seeing how they're faring after the War of Hybern and their general dynamic when there isn't a massive conflict looming over their heads. It also feels like decent set up for A Court of Silver Flames. I hear that ACOSF is from Nesta's perspective so her and Cassian's chapters felt illuminating.
My major critiques are that literally not much happens. There's not a lot pushing the plot along. That means it's really cozy but I'd recommend listening to it if that sounds boring to you. It also comes off a little like fan fiction, honestly. Not that there's anything wrong with fan fiction in its own right but for a fully published novel, it felt like it should be a bit more fleshed out.
Overall, I enjoyed reading this bridge between ACOWAR and ACOSF. It was quick. It was fun. Really cute.
