The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells

4.0

I really didn't expect this to be as horrifying as it is. I knew it caused a lot of controversy when it was first published (over 100 years ago, 1896), but I just kinda wrote that off as different horror standards, as is often the case... but holy crap The Island of Dr. Moreau made my skin crawl.

Like many old books, it has some uncomfortable language and views but it's not the worst and much of it added to the horror and helped establish Dr. Moreau as the true 'beast'.

If you're squeamish regarding torture and animal cruelty (I know I am), then be warned that there's quite a lot in this (almost) novella. This is one of H. G. Wells better works, with an interesting look into the views of evolution, creationism and mankind's place in it all in the late 19th centaury.
