The Only Child
by Mi-ae Seo
Are serial killers born or are they made? The Only Child is like a fascinating combination of “The Silence of the Lambs,” meets “Baby Teeth,” and the best part is that’s wrapped up in a novel that really puts the thrill in thriller. The novel follows South Korean criminal psychologist Seonkyeong, as she is asked to interview famous serial killer, Yi Byeongdo, who says he’ll only answer questions from her. At the same time, there is a mysterious series of arson related fires, culminating in the deaths of two elderly peoples and the survival of their granddaughter, Hayeong. Hayeong is Seonkyeong’s 11 year old stepdaughter, whose father essentially abandons her career over to her new stepmother, claiming a busy career as a surgeon. As Seonkyeong works to draw information out of the serial killer, she begins noticing several key behaviors and personality traits that are similar in both him and her new stepdaughter, including a tense and abusive relationship with their biological mothers. You’ll definitely enjoy this “needs to be turned into a movie right away,” book, if you’re a fan of fast paced thrillers.
