Under the Dome
by Stephen King
I was looking forward to a return to King's more epic style and scope, shifting away from his more personal hauntings like "Duma Key."
The first 950 pages really delivered. Driving narrative, sharply defined heroes and villains. The last 150 pages lost the focus and the plot. People died without reason or import. Things happened just because. It almost felt like after page 950, King went with a somewhat fleshed-out outline of what he wanted the last 500 pages to be, but his editor put the kibosh on a 1500 page book.
Most of the book felt as if King was summing up the Bush era, with Big Jim Rennie and his repressive politics standing in for GWB. The dome is a metaphor for the post 9/11 politics in play from 2000 - 2008. But the deus ex machina put in play in "Under the Dome" was too goofy to continue that like of thought.
I found the reason for the dome (which I won't discuss specifically) was what ruined the book, or held it back from being great.
