The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller
fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: No

I wish I never bought this book.

It read like a first draft full of ideas that needed to be written down but would be expanded upon, eventually.

The MC was supposed to be feminist but using men for sex and gifts and discarding them when you're bored is not feminist. Yuck!

The King was too soft and allowed the MC to walk all over him. What?

Oh! This docile King wanted to colonize the world. Thought I should mention that.

Oh, and the worldbuilding was nonexistent. Normally I can imagine something, but I seriously struggled to picture this world in my mind.

The MC is supposed to be smart but the way she gets the kings attention
by wearing pants under her black dress in a room full of women wearing the kings favourite colour green and ignoring him
was silly and I will not believe that it would actually work.

And the King's shadow power was the only thing fantastical about this book. It also didn't do anything for him when he needed it to.

The romance is still left to be found. I've been looking but I can't find it anywhere. Maybe it's hidden in the buried chest with the body of the first and last boy to ever break her heart. Yes, the chest that could be linked to her! Remember she's supposed to Slytherin smart.

The Shadows Between Us was the 4th "fantasy" book I ever read or attempted to read. The first 3 were part of a trilogy and set my expectations comfortably high and this book bombed so bad I almost went into a reading slump.

It now lives in a pile of books that will be unhauled.
