Blindsight by Peter Watts
5.0
Blindsight as a whole is a meditation on how important consciousness is to intelligence. It's a first contact story where the menagerie of humans sent out to meet the "Big Dumb Object" are each each extensively modified for their role. The sfnal ideas behind each character would be plenty to wrap an entire novel around, but taken together we get a rush concepts that will require careful reading for all but the most hard core science fiction readers.
It's worth the effort. In asking repeatedly the traditional question (when you go THIS far, are we still human?) in the context of the very alien aliens, an entirely different question is answered. Plenty of action and character developments. You may very well not like ANY of the characters. You may find yourself a bit sidetracked by the genetically engineered vampire. Hopefully you'll stick with it and think about it for a while when you're done.
