The Carrier by Sophie Hannah

2.0

An entertaining but frustrating read. Hannah is very good at creating intriguing mysteries, but doesn't always deliver. In this case, the answer to the mystery turned out to be both trivial and farfetched. What's worse, the characters' motivations made little sense. I have no idea why the uncharismatic murder suspect was worshipped by his friends, or why the tough, brilliant business woman chose to live with the dimwit football fanatic. The relationship between Charlie and Simon isn't developing at all, and he's more of an asshole than ever before. I never feel as normal and well-adjusted as when reading Hannah, and usually enjoy the twisted, damaged souls that populate her novels, but enough is enough. Even dysfunction and craziness have to make some kind of sense.
