Miss Mole by E.H. Young

dark emotional hopeful mysterious reflective sad tense

4.0

Miss Mole is something like an adult Mary Poppins -- a servant with a mysterious past, very self-contained, who enhances the lives of those she serves, sometimes making them uncomfortable. But we learn more of the inner life of Miss Mole, and come to want her to achieve her freedom from the humiliating round of servitude...something that comes to satisfying fruition at the end.

Though it was a slow start for me, and at times I was a bit befuddled by what was going on behind the surface, I came to appreciate the subtle and wry humor. I'll read this again and better appreciate the hints and clues that Young drops along the way.
