Frog by Mary Calmes
5.0
My 50/50 debate with Ms. Calmes continues. It really is an every other book relationship for me. Weber and Cy were wonderful! This story falls firmly into the love it category. I’d been nervous to read this one since so many people rave about it and Ms. Calmes is so hit or miss for me. I was not disappointed. This is one time where the story lives up to the hype.
Weber Yates is a cowboy. Riding bulls and a transient life style is all he’s known for more than twenty years. He lost his family at a young age and since then hasn’t’ allowed anyone close. Meeting Cy when he was working a job at a dude ranch one summer was a good surprise. The connection between them was instantaneous even if Weber knew they could never have a future together.
Cyrus Benning fell for Weber three years earlier during that very first meeting. All he’s ever wanted was for Web to stay. His job as a neurosurgeon keeps him tied to San Francisco. Weber’s been in and out of Cy’s life, stopping for brief periods when the rodeo brought him through. But Cy thought the last time might have been the end. His ultimatum didn’t go over well. Until his phone rang with Weber on the other end Cy was sure he’d lost the only man he’d ever love.
I definitely get it now. The connection between these two men is just so strong and you ache for them to figure out how to be together. Weber’s pride makes that so difficult. The insecurities in his soul are so blatant and yet Cy’s love is just so clearly there and welcoming as well. My heart ached for these two from the first phone call. There was so much history and want there. I just wanted to shake Web and scream at him, “this man loves you, don’t let him get away!” Yet in the end I respected Web’s pride so much too. I understood why he didn’t think he could have Cy even as I yearned for him to realize there are other solutions.
So kids…yeah they can be obnoxious, but Web was just so dang sweet with all those rugrats. They all just made me smile with their reactions to the big tough softie of a cowboy. Sure it’s a little farfetched and instantaneous adoration, but I’ve come to accept those sorts of over the top reactions from Ms. Calmes characters. Her hero’s always seem to inspire immediate feelings of a sort in the other surrounding characters. Here it was just too cute. Actually with children I find it much more easy to believe than when it’s every other adult fawning all over the hero. I accepted the adult’s love of Weber in this story easier as well because their reactions came because of the change in the man they knew and loved. Cy’s family wasn’t used to seeing him so relaxed and free, neither were his colleagues and friends. Weber’s influence on him was clear and distinct, Cy was a different person with Web around and thus it made sense for everyone to take to him quickly.
But the real heart of this story is how deep the connection between these two men goes. They may have only spent limited time together, but you just knew that no matter what happened when they were apart all the other really wanted was to be with the man he’d left behind. Cy was going to wait for eternity if that was what it took for Web to finally settle down and return to him. And I couldn’t wait for Web to realize that Cy didn’t need to be kissing any more frogs. He’d found his prince ages ago and was just waiting for the transformation to be complete and the frog to realize he wasn’t a frog any longer. Web is just such a good and caring soul. He’s the sort of man you wish you had in your life, sweet, caring, well mannered, and yet clearly a man.
After all that time I’m so glad to get the HEA here. This was sweet and sexy and a wonderful case of love triumphs over all. This one will go down in my favorites and books to re-read piles for ages to come. :D
