The Ruins by Scott Smith

5.0

"He stopped screaming - for the space of two breaths - then started up again. The stopping was almost as bad as the screaming. He changed his mind, the stopping was worse."

Synopsis
A group of friends on a holiday in Mexico set off to an archaeological dig site for their last adventure before flying home. Fter the long hike they stumble upon the Mayan ruins. A hill  covered a green vines and deep red flowers. Tired, thirsty and sunburnt they walk into the vines. Now the local Mayan village won't let them leave.

Thoughts
I really wish Scott Smith wrote more books. He has such a way with words. This novel doesn't have chapters. At the start I found it annoying. But I understand why Smith wrote it this way. The reader does not get a pause or a break through the whole experience. It creates a "when does this end? When do I get a break?" Feeling. Which I never got as a reader. It just kept going and going. Which is what the charters would of felt like. Constant dread and helplessness. Shit hit the fan so quick in this group of friends. And I don't know if that's realistic or unrealistic. Id like to think I would of held it together for a little bit longer. Very much a body horror novel. Man vs Nature conflicts are always fun to read.
