Hemlock Grove by Brian McGreevy

wow, this book is beautifully written and very messed up. it was a little slow to start, but once i got into the thick of things, i could hardly put it down! i'm very eager to watch the netflix show now, even though i fully resent that it's directed by eli roth - a notoriously gratuitous, trashy, and generally unskilled horror director.

not a five star review because there are some rape scenes in this book, as well as a number of slurs for really no reason. additionally, the final 20 pages or so completely change in tone from where you think the story is going to end, which was a little disappointing for me. i understand that the way it ends makes it more "horrifying" and "tragic," but i don't know that it was done in a way that made a whole lot of sense. my rating might be higher for this book if the story had kept on the trajectory i had expected during/immediately after the climax.

overall, a great read. still highly recommend this if you love werewolves and slow-burn horror stories.
