I loved learning about haenyeo and the matrifocal society of Jeju island. The characters had depth and complexity, and the story was heartbreaking and important. I think the frame of the book
(Using the arrival of American tourists as a lens through which the main character reflects on her life)
had some feelings of American ethnocentrism, thus 4 not 5 stars.
