I really really wanted to love this because everything about it is well up my alley: history, intrigue, the period itself...But oh my word, this felt like wading through treacle. I read every night before going to sleep and something about this book sent me off to sleep after two or three pages. I think another reviewer said that if you don't read this in longer sittings, it can be easy to drop the complex threads and find it hard to follow. This was certainly true for me. I might try it again on another occasion - then again, in a world of so many good books, maybe I won't.
