I Think Our Son Is Gay, Vol. 02 by Okura

5.0

4.5 Stars

Bumped it up to a 5 rating solely because of the chapter on "waste" and what it means when something is "being wasted."

Tomoko buys her son a pair of shoes that he hasn't worn yet. Hiroki vaguely says that he just doesn't want to wear them. Jokingly, the mother states that if she doesn't wear the shoes, he'll soon outgrow them, and they will be a wasted purchase.

Later, when Tomoko is at work, her supervisor leaves his shift with the company of another man. One of her coworkers states that their supervisor being gay "was a waste." This sends Tomoko into a sudden realization that even if she considered Hiroki not wearing the shoes, a waste; it was his decision on when to wear them. Tomoko realizes that even if she perceives it as a waste, her opinion on the matter was, like that of her coworker: irrelevant. It was Hiroki's choice, after all.

Later afterwards, Hiroki wears his new shoes, when walking to school with the boy Tomoko perceives him to have a crush on. She laughs that her son could have just told her that he wanted to save his shoes when he could shows them off to his potential crush.

I always thought that this series was cute. An LGBT, slice of life manga that shows the loving support of family member(s)? 10/10.
But this particular chapter just blew me away and made me re-evaluate just how much I was going to like this series as a whole. This series went from a cute story that I wouldn't mind reading to a series of which I have high hopes. I am very excited to read Volume 3.
