Inheritance by Christopher Paolini
4.0

As a middle school librarian I have heard both sides of the 'love it'/'hate it' debate on this book. I understand why people are annoyed with it, I see the similarities with Tolkien, I agree that it does feel like a D&D adventure at many points...and yet, I have enjoyed reading this series. As I read it, I have not been pulled out of the story by these things. They are comments that I see as I look back on what I read. As I read it, though, I am in the world, I feel the emotions and tensions that the author intends. I experience this book. And that is why I am officially putting myself on the side of the 'love it'.

I want to be a dragon rider. I want to be an elf. I love these characters and want to live among them. That to me is a great book. Or, in this case, a great series. Yes, he was young when he wrote the first book. Yes, the writing is a bit simple in the beginning...but it is not enough to push me away from a good story. Yes, the story is similar in a lot of ways to the Lord of the Rings...but you know what, that is worth using as a basis for any book. And Paolini is not the first - nor will be be the last - to let classic works color his own vision. If he had used a hack as his muse...then I would have been disappointed, instead he chose to emulate a master. That is forgivable, especially since he took the building blocks of Tolkien and turned them into something that becomes its own story.

I enjoyed it. I am glad he wrote it. I am glad I read it.
