I've actually read the Richard Lattimore translation of Iliad (and Odyssey), not the Robert Fagles version(s). I read somewhere that the Lattimore version is a more accurate translation, while the Fagles version isn't quite as technically correct but is much easier to read. From reading a portion of Fagles's Odyssey in high school, I would tend to agree with this sentiment.
I personally prefer faithfulness to the original over simplicity, though if you haven't read any translation of Iliad or Odyssey, give any version you want a try. These are classic stories for a reason--they contain powerful themes and are entertaining, as well.
