The Best Life Book Club by Sheila Roberts
4.0

The Best Life Book Club is a heartwarming story centered on the themes of friendship, community, the healing power of books, and most importantly, fresh starts.

The story opens with newly divorced Karissa Newcomb moving to her new home in Gig Harbor, Washington, with her nine-year-old daughter, Macy. Leaving Seattle behind, Karissa also embarks on a new job at a publishing house. She's welcomed into her new neighborhood by Alice, a warm-hearted widow in her late fifties, and Margot, a forty-year-old divorcee grappling with unemployment after being laid off. Karissa soon grows close to her neighbors, and together with Alice’s cantankerous older sister Josie, they form a book club. What begins as discussions of literature quickly transforms into meaningful conversations about life, with each member sharing their struggles and wisdom, inspiring one another to embrace change and growth.

The author portrays the dynamics of female friendships, illustrating the friendship, support, and honesty that define these bonds. Despite their differences in age, experiences, and personalities, the women learn to care for and respect one another, each bringing unique perspectives to help the others navigate their own challenges. Karissa’s professional journey at the publishing house adds an enjoyable layer to the story, offering insight into the literary world. The light touch of romance is subtle, allowing the focus to remain on the group of friends, allowing the reader to “see” each character's personal growth and their deepening friendship.

Throughout the book, the author explores themes such as infidelity, betrayal, grief, professional struggles, and complex family relationships. These topics are handled with heart and humor, maintaining a light, uplifting tone.
