This book made me deeply uncomfortable. I had a knot in my stomach the whole time I was reading it. The fact that the main character’s point of view is never really shared, and we only see her through the eyes of others as she spirals, makes this book fascinating and tragic. The writing felt a little clunky at times due to being translated from Korean, but it was still really well done. If only one person had been supportive of Yeong-hye’s choices—just one person!—she might have been okay.
