I hadn’t read a Michael McDowell book in years even though two of his novels, Blackwater and The Elementals, are some of my favorites. I picked up Katie on a whim, not really knowing what it was about and just... oh my, what an emotional rollercoaster. Highly recommended, especially for fans of revenge stories and old-fashioned penny dreadfuls. But be warned, McDowell doesn’t care about your feelings. As soon as things are looking up for the protagonist, he’ll pull the rug out from under you and smile while he does it.
