Beneath Ceaseless Skies #183 by I.L. Heisler, Scott H. Andrews, Richard Parks, Naim Kabir, R.B. Lemberg

4.0

This story is the third I've read now in the Birdverse. It has the same amazing worldbuilding but goes deeper into the magic system and individual variations in access to that power. I loved the exploration of healing and autistic and queer identities and how mental illness and neurodivergence manifest in the Birdverse's magic construction. This story felt a little less comfortably self-contained than the other two I read though, in that there was so was so much implied background to the political history and character dynamics that I wanted more information and a longer story. The ending left me feeling a little unsettled and open-ended and I want desperately to know of our protagonists found any peace. It was still very sweet and fascinating and beautiful though.
