On the whole this was an enjoyable book, albeit a little hard to follow at times, but I largely put that down to having read it on audio - I suspect a physical copy would have been significantly easier to follow, especially the action scenes.

At times I felt there were a few too many characters and it was hard to keep track of them, which was mostly due to their not being enough time to flesh everyone out, especially while working on all the world building and explaining histories and backgrounds.

I’m saying that, the main characters were awesome, and the book had a super interesting premise, cool magic system and societal structure, and the final third was a whirlwind of plot twists that was super well done, so I’d say the payoff was worth it!

It did very much felt like set up for the rest of the series, but nonetheless I’ll definitely read the next one! I’be put it at 3.75 starts but if I had understood it properly it’d probably be 4.25 stars!
