This book was recommended to me when the Twilight series first came out and I was disgusted. A Teen Librarian I worked with passed me this book, and man, was she right! Katya, the heroine, is not a helpless, directionless girl who sacrifices all (including her very life) for love like Bella; she is powerful, intelligent, resourceful, and deadly! Her relationship with the hero grows from mutual respect and admiration, where they come to rely on one another strengths and protect each other from their weaknesses. I really liked how sex was handled in this book as well- a choice between two young adults who are equals that care deeply for one another. Added bonus? The heroine doesn't become a pregnant and married princess who lives happily ever after at the end, because her life and story are still ongoing. I loved this book and highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys YA fiction or fantasy!
