In Such Good Company: Eleven Years of Laughter, Mayhem, and Fun in the Sandbox by Carol Burnett

3.0

I've been a fan of Carol Burnett since I was a young girl. I have many fond memories of watching her show, and am not really ashamed to say that everything I know about both the film and book versions of Gone With the Wind, I know from her "Went with the Wind" parody sketch. (Don't worry, I'll fix that someday.)

Her previous book "This Time Together" was a look back at her early life and her journey into the world of acting was one that I thoroughly enjoyed. I was looking very much forward to this book as it takes a closer look at the time period of her life when she was making The Carol Burnett Show. It didn't disappoint as a vehicle to gain insight into some of the backstage workings of the show as it related to skits. And I was delighted by some of the behind the scenes stories. I did find it somewhat tedious to read through the indepth descriptions of some of the skits that I was very, very familiar with - but I allow that not everyone reading the book will have had the same knowledge of, and memory for, parodies and sketches that occurred many, many years ago.

I was pleased that the audio version included actual audio clippings of previous interviews from some of the stars of the show, including Carol, herself. This is an avenue I think a lot of autobiography/biography via audio usually neglect and it was wonderful to hear it included. In this way the end of the book almost felt like more of a podcast and less like a straight reading of a written book.

Overall, I think that anyone who enjoyed Carol Burnett's show would very much enjoy her look back at this time of her life.
