The Grandest Game by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Thank you to Penguin Random House SA for providing me with a free copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

*Disclaimer: I have not read The Inheritance Games trilogy or The Brothers Hawthorne.*

Oh, my goodness! I really loved this! Thanks to PRHSA YA for including me in a readalong of this title and sending me a cute PR package!

As someone who loves a great, well-written character, this was the first thing that endeared me to this story; the more fascinating, the better. Most, if not all, of these characters were introduced in the previous books (I am not sure as to who the new characters are - I think Odette is one - since I avoided the Discord chat like the plague) but there is sufficient backstory for each that I wasn't bothered by it and these characters were fresh and new to me.

The character dynamics later on in the story is simply fire!

The second thing I loved was the big words and short chapters - I'm the biggest fan of a short chapter since I do not like to pause in the middle of one. #BookishPeeve

What to expect:
- Multiple POVs,
- Sizzling romantic tension,
- Short chapters for the win,
- High stakes,
- Escape Room vibes.

Be warned, though, that this book is very reference-heavy, so reading the four books before this one would be advisable.

I loved the clean writing style and the plot twists were perfectly timed; I did not enjoy feeling like an idiot for a lot of this book, nor did I love that cliffhanger ending... But, overall, this is a solid opening of a new series that I, for one, am salivating in anticipation for.

As is usually my modus operandi I have filmed my readalong experience; if you want my initial thoughts and reactions to The Grandest Game, please do check it out - you can find it here.
